Thousands of acres of the Phoenix mountain and desert preserves offer everything from busy, arduous summit climbs to secluded, meandering valley walks. Trails open at 5 a.m. and most areas close at 7 p.m. daily.

This is the view looking east from an unnamed peak in the Phoenix Mountain Preserves showing the Squaw Peak Parkway State Route 51. The McDowell Mountains are in the distance. I remember coming out here in 1966 and there was nothing. A two lane road turned to a dirt road at Tatum Blvd. In 1983 (?) the Paradise Valley Mall went in and this area exploded. I drive south on SR51 every morning and look up at these Peaks. I never hike off-trail, but I am good at finding little trails. And finding where the coyotes bed down at night. The canine coyotes not the Mexican Coyotes. No signs indicated that this was an off-limits area - I would respect those signs.

I hiked the Elephant Mountain Loop out of the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area north of Cave Creek. It was a very nice clear day with a slight breeze. This is the view from Elephant Mountain looking east south east. Cave Creek and Carefree are visible in the foreground and mid. The McDowell Mountains are visible in the middle right. Flatiron, Weaver's Needle and the Superstition Mountains are visible in the distance.

Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area.
The newest addition to Maricopa Countys Regional Parks System, the conservation area encompasses 2,154 acres of diverse, rugged upper Sonoran Desert. The north Valley location contains fascinating archaeology sites and lush riparian areas along Cave Creek, which flows throughout the winter months. Remnants of early mining and ranching, from which the park gets its name, are still apparent in the park. This area is a must see for all wildflower lovers in the spring. The abundant vegetation present in the conservation area provides a rich habitat for a diverse assemblage of wildlife.

Bear Mountain is a nice training hike in the Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness northwest of Sedona and west of the Enchantment Resort in Boynton Canyon. Strenuous but well rewarding with great views. Fay Canyon to the eastsoutheast, Sedona to the southeast, San Francisco Peaks to the northeast.

The hike to the top of the mountain is mostly unshaded, steep and difficult in places. Great views the whole way. The trail begins at a broad path at the parking area, crosses two washes and then starts a gradual ascent 1/4 mile to the wilderness boundary at the base of the mountain. The trail narrows and begins a 450 foot switchback that is steep and rocky in places. It levels out following narrow plateau area and then begins a steep rocky 500 foot climb in a narrow side canyon to a broad plateau. It crosses the plateau gradually ascending, dips down, and then climbs another 400 feet to a false summit. Fay canyon views are to the right (northeast). The trail continues a moderate climb to true summit. There are great panoramic views here. Continue over level ground another 200 yards to the Red Canyon overlook and a view of the San Francisco Peaks in the distance to the north. Return by the same route. Do not attempt this hike when there is significant snow on the mountain.

This is the view from the Sugarloaf Mountain Trail looking mostly west showing fire damage and areas spared.

The Horseshoe II fire roared through the Chiricahua Wilderness in June, 2011. Much of the wilderness area was devastated by the fire an the floods that came with the 2011 monsoon. Valiant efforts saved much of the Chiricahua National Monument. The western 2/3's to 3/4's of CNM was saved by back fires and suppression efforts. The eastern 1/4 to 1/3 was hit hard but hit spotty. It always amazes me how a wildland fire can scorch an area with intense heat, but completely spare a couple of acres right next to it.

This is the view I get every morning while I’m here in Phuket, Thailand. The scenery here is spectacular. The sun rise however is either hit or miss… missing more than it hits. But when it does hit, it’s one of the most beautiful places to watch the sunrise.

The Franklin Mountains of Texas are a small range (23 miles long, 3 miles (4.8 km) wide) that extend from El Paso, Texas north into New Mexico.[1] The Franklins were formed due to crustal extension related to the Cenozoic Rio Grande rift. Although the present topography of the range and adjoining basins is controlled by extension during rifting in the last 10 million years, faults within the range also record deformation during the Laramide orogeny, between 85 and 45 million years ago.

The highest peak is North Franklin Mountain at 7,192 feet (2,192 m). Much of the range is part of the Franklin Mountains State Park. The mountains are composed primarily of sedimentary rock with some igneous intrusions. Geologists refer to them as tilted-block fault mountains and in them can be found billion-year-old Precambrian rocks, the oldest in Texas.

The A is lit on fire when Austin High School (from which I graduated long ago) plays sports.
