Two mountain lions gaze serenely over their home range from atop a ridge of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Artist Ila McAfee Turner brought out the gentle beauty and fleeting companionship of these big predators during the days a newly mated pair spends together. During the rest of the year the mature cats live in separate territories.

Turner lived in Taos, New Mexico, but was well acquainted with this dramatic, steep-sided Colorado canyon and its animal inhabitants. She had grown up riding horseback around her family's ranch outside the mining town of Gunnison, Colorado. In a song titled "Did You Ever Hear of Gunnison?" the artist described her childhood home as she showed these mountain lions, "way up there, in thin clean air, far away from anywhere, up on the beautiful wester slope, high in the rugged Rocky Mountains."

This is the view from the Sedona Overlook on the south end of Wilson Mountain looking Eastsoutheast. Mitten Ridge and Munds Mountain prominent in the upper middle. I hiked Wilson Mountain in Sedona's Oak Creek Canyon up the North Trail from the Encinosa Campground.

At 7,122 feet, Wilson Mountain is the highest of the red and white sandstone peaks surrounding Sedona, so its upper slopes provide the best elevated views of the area. The top is a grassy basalt plateau about 2 miles across, rather than a discrete summit, and may be reached from two directions, via steep trails that converge half way up and continue to a second junction in woodland on the plateau. From here one branch goes south to an overlook of Sedona and lower Oak Creek, while the other, longer path leads to the north edge of the plateau for an equally fine panorama of upper Oak Creek. The shorter of the two approach routes still involves a round trip of 10 miles and an elevation gain of 2,200 feet (add 2 miles and 250 feet for the alternative), making this the most strenuous hike near Sedona, but the effort is rewarded by beautiful scenery and relatively few other hikers.

Yesterday we celebrated our anniversary by spending the day in the mountain meadows of the Alberta Rockies. It's one of our favourite things to do in the summer. We whiled away the hours chasing butterflies, enjoying the wildflowers, lying on our backs watching big white fluffy clouds go by, breathing in the delicious scented mountain air and quietly listening to the hypnotic harmonic hum of bees and the sound of the wild grasses swishing gently in the breeze.

As always, at this time of year, tons of bees and butterflies were happily buzzing and fluttering everywhere in the meadows, alighting on all the wildflowers. Mountain meadows are the best place to see butterflies: it was chock full of skippers, coppers, and gorgeous little blues, all of which were simply too fast for me to track. The fritillaries, checkerspots and swallowtails stay on flowers a bit longer, so they are my best bets for photographing. It was sunny and hot and there was a nice breeze blowing, which cooled us wonderfully but made it a bit difficult to photograph flowers and butterflies. But, as always, if I just keep clicking the shutter, I somehow manage to capture something in focus.

We ended the day sitting beside a cool burbling mountain stream in the dappled shade of aspen, birch and pines, where we devoured a delicious picnic I'd packed for us. It was an utterly perfect day.

This is the view looking east from an unnamed peak in the Phoenix Mountain Preserves showing the Squaw Peak Parkway State Route 51. The McDowell Mountains are in the distance. I remember coming out here in 1966 and there was nothing. A two lane road turned to a dirt road at Tatum Blvd. In 1983 (?) the Paradise Valley Mall went in and this area exploded. I drive south on SR51 every morning and look up at these Peaks. I never hike off-trail, but I am good at finding little trails. And finding where the coyotes bed down at night. The canine coyotes not the Mexican Coyotes. No signs indicated that this was an off-limits area - I would respect those signs.

Up in the rainy mountain forests of coastal BC, Canada, these pungently aromatic skunk cabbages flower every spring. They come up out of the ponds, and other soaking wet grounds. They have a very strong aroma like Skunk. Thus their name. What do you call that when something is named after its attribute? I forget, but Skunk Cabbage definitely is one of them... I'm not sure about the cabbage part, though. But I digress. Here you have it. Skunk Cabbage.

I hiked the Elephant Mountain Loop out of the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area north of Cave Creek. It was a very nice clear day with a slight breeze. This is the view from Elephant Mountain looking east south east. Cave Creek and Carefree are visible in the foreground and mid. The McDowell Mountains are visible in the middle right. Flatiron, Weaver's Needle and the Superstition Mountains are visible in the distance.

Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area.
The newest addition to Maricopa Countys Regional Parks System, the conservation area encompasses 2,154 acres of diverse, rugged upper Sonoran Desert. The north Valley location contains fascinating archaeology sites and lush riparian areas along Cave Creek, which flows throughout the winter months. Remnants of early mining and ranching, from which the park gets its name, are still apparent in the park. This area is a must see for all wildflower lovers in the spring. The abundant vegetation present in the conservation area provides a rich habitat for a diverse assemblage of wildlife.

Central Andes Mountains, Salar de Arizaro, Argentina are featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 23 crew member on the International Space Station. The high plains (3,000 to greater than 5,000 meters elevation, 13,000 to 19,000 feet) of the Andes Mountains, also known as the Puna, appear in the foreground of this photograph, with a line of young volcanoes facing the much lower Atacama Desert (1,000--2,000 meters elevation). Several large dry lakes, marked by light-toned salt crusts, occupy the basins between major thrust faults in the Puna. Salar de Arizaro (foreground) is the largest of the dry lakes in this view (salar means waterless salt flat in Spanish). This panorama was taken by a station crew member looking southeast across the South American continent when the ISS was almost directly over the Atacama Desert near Chile's Pacific coast. The Atlantic Ocean coastline (River Plate where Argentina's capital city of Buenos Aires is located) is dimly visible at top left. A striking geological and landscape contrast is visible at center which separates two distinct geological zones, namely the Puna and the Sierras Pampeanas. The Sierras Pampeanas Mountains are lower in elevation and have few young volcanoes, in contrast to the Puna. Sharp-crested ranges are separated by wide, low valleys in this region. The Salinas Grandes - ephemeral shallow salt lakes at top left (salina means salt lake in Spanish) - occupies one of these valleys. The general color change from reds and browns in the foreground to blues and greens in the upper part of the image reflects the major climatic regions, namely the deserts of the Atacama and Puna, versus the low grassy plains of central Argentina where rainfall is sufficient to promote lush prairie grass growth - known famously as the pampas in Argentina. The Salinas Grandes mark an intermediate semiarid region. What accounts for the changes in landscape? The geology of this part of the Andes is a result of the eastward subduction of the Nazca tectonic plate underneath South America. Investigations using seismic data suggest that the Puna is underlain by a steeply dipping sector of the subducting Nazca plate. The Sierras Pampeanas zone however, is underlain by a sector of the Nazca plate that is almost horizontal, possibly due to the subduction of a submarine mountain range known as the Juan Fernandez Ridge. In the simplest terms, ridges are topographic highs that are difficult to stuff down subduction zones, with profound effects on the volcanism and structures of the upper plate.
